Why you should use furniture glides

There are many reasons to fit furniture glides to furniture. As the name suggests, one use is to allow for easier maneuvering of the items across the flooring. They work well due to the fact that they have softer, rounded edges instead of rugged, pointed feet. This allows the foot to move much more easily on hardwood, stone and metal flooring, as well as carpet, tarmac and even cement. Another role is to protect the flooring from damage. Some carpets can be permanently dented by the placement of heavy furniture on them, so these glides help to prevent this. They also work well to increase the maneuverability of items that would be too unstable on wheel casters, such as ladders and machinery. There is even the option to get adjustable glides that can raise and lower furniture that might need frequent readjusting.

Measuring the tube for the right sized furniture glides

Furniture glides fit into place by slotting into the cylindrical tubes of furniture legs. Because of the reliance on the spring mechanism within it, the glide should be measured to fit exactly into this space. If the measurements are not correctly taken, this could affect the way that the item rests on the glide, and could even cause it to come loose. The main measurements needed are the tube size and the base diameter, but these measurements can sometimes be found in the documentation that comes with the item, or on the old glide. In the situation where a glide is incorrectly sized and is a little loose in the tube, a layer of insulating tape or a small amount of insulating foam can seal the gap and create a tighter fit.
